The SWMS provides group violin classes to elementary students in 1st through 5th grade. These classes are held after school at various Beaverton Public Schools. The SWMS is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing music education in Beaverton. It rents space at each school, maintains experienced instructors, and provides necessary insurance to provide for a safe, familiar, and effective teaching environment for music.
The curriculum of each class does vary with the grade-level and dedication of each class. SWMS allows each instructor to find an appropriate curriculum. Many SWMS instructors have been highly trained in methods such as the Suzuki Method. Most hold college degrees.
The goal of the teachers is to create a fun environment in which kids can try out playing an instrument together as a group. The violin is the chosen instrument for these course -- even though many kids go on to try other instruments later. These after school programs are intended to provide young students with an opportunity to make friends and create a self-identity -- "of being a musician" -- that they can take with them into middle school.
Parents are encouraged to observe classes. Parents may participate with the permission of the instructor. To observe a class this year, please contact the instructor.
